These are the activities that took place at the 2017 Olde Tyme Saturday celebration. See the schedule page for the activities in 2018.
Friday – Warming Up
For those who arrive on Friday the chuck wagon supper will take place in the park from 6 PM to 8 PM. Evening entertainment for everyone will be the Movie in the Park starting at 8 PM.
Saturday – The Big Show
Enjoy a chuckwagon breakfast, then get ready for a laid back relaxing weekend. Sit under a tree and visit with a new or old friend. Walk the line-up of old tractors and antique cars. Reminisce of the days when you – or someone – had a set of wheels like that or spent a long hot day on a similar tractor. Gather near the announcer’s stage for the 8:30 AM flag raising ceremony.
For a change of pace try your hand at the 13th annual Gaylen Hagemann Memorial Poker Run which will be held from 9:00 – 11:00 AM. It is open to all modes of transportation that can complete the six mile course in the allotted time.
The morning is filled with fun for all ages with the sandpile beginning at 11:00 AM. Children twelve and under can dig for hidden treasures (and just be kids having fun digging in the sand). The “Prairie Dog Roundup” (stick horse rodeo) for ages 3-7 begins at 9:00 AM and the Bookmobile will open at 10:00 AM. The Olde Tyme Saturday Express barrel train will be giving rides during the day for the smaller children.
If you are planning on participating in the Dean Witte Memorial Antique Tractor Pull weigh in is from 9 AM till 12 Noon. The scales for weigh in are located one block east of the north east corner of the park.
The Vernon Community Center, which houses the Something For Everyone Fair, quilt and brand board displays and parade registration booth opens at 9:00 AM also. Here you can also visit the Vernon History Room and get a cool drink of water. Or you can wander through the flea market to find that “special” deal and view the many displays and demonstrations that will be available throughout the day.
Enjoy lunch from one of the many vendors in the park then sit back and relax as it is time for the “something for everyone” parade at 1 PM. If it moves and you want to show it off – now is the time! Big – small – old – new – rusty – restored – everybody is welcome.
There’s always keen competition in the horseshoe pits so come try your luck at the horseshoe pitching tournament. For a small fee you can enter as a single or with a partner. Invite your friends for more fun and a bigger jackpot prize. This all starts at 1:00PM but is within viewing distance of the parade route.
Support future celebrations by bidding at the auction. Local artisans, thus far, have donated some original artwork, jewelry, quilt, commemorative belt buckle, and a variety of items. Many more items are expected by auction time.
The 5th Annual Dean Witte Memorial Antique Tractor Pull also commences at 2:30 PM. This is a fun sport using a progressive weight sled. Classes are decided by tractor weight and a hook fee is charged. A non-sanctioned FUN pull with proceeds to benefit the Dean & Barb Witte Memorial Scholarship Fund.
A Watermelon Feed and Tractor Games will also take place in the afternoon.
Continue your exciting trip out of tyme at the famous Vernon Fire Department Barbecue — pit cooked beef, country beans, fresh corn-on-the-cob and all the trimmings to satisfy your appetite 5:30 PM – 7:30 PM. The kids (young and old) are treated to a fire engine ride after the firemen finish serving. Then at sundown find a spot to sit down and enjoy the evening entertainment and the fireworks display.
New This Year
Horseshoes: The Hank Andrews Family has contributed $400 to the winner’s jack pot this year to sweeten the deal. This money will be added to the entry fee funds and divided among the winners. So practice up and show up for a great day of competition and fun.
Tractor Games: Join in on the tractor games Saturday afternoon. Test your skills at tractor driving with a round of contests designed to be fun and entertaining for both drivers and spectators.
Free Watermelon Feed: Slick Spot Farm Truck & Auto is providing watermelon for this event. No entry fee — but there may be a contest involved. Be prepared!!
Commemorative Cancellation Postmark: A special postal postmark to celebrate the 25th Anniversary of Olde Tyme Saturday and the 125th Anniversary of the founding of Vernon has been approved by the US Post Office. This special cancellation will be available August 18-September 19, 2017, along with a specially designed cache and envelope. These items will be available at the Vernon Post Office and during the Olde Tyme Saturday celebration. See Jody at the Vernon Post Office or at the celebration for further details.
Sunday – Winding Down
A chuckwagon breakfast from 7:30 AM to 9:30 AM, followed by a non-denominational church service at 9:30 AM fills the morning. Watching the “load out” of the iron and partaking in the noon pot luck meal, for everyone who wishes to share, climaxes the scheduled activities. Everyone is invited to stay and help with the cleanup and put away during the “wind-down” of the celebration.
