The following information relates to the theme for the 2017 OTS celebration. We hope you were able to attend and enjoyed it!
Vernon Olde Tyme Saturday – a weekend set aside to welcome everyone to our small town. A weekend to step away from your modern problems, relish a weekend from the past, and enjoy our 2017 theme:
“TAKE ME HOME COUNTRY ROADS”
The year 2017 marks the 25th annual Olde Tyme Saturday in Vernon celebration and the 125th anniversary of the founding of Vernon in 1892. The theme “Take Me Home Country Roads” is a call for everyone and anyone to come home to Vernon to celebrate the Quasquicentennial of Vernon and the Silver Anniversary of the Olde Tyme Saturday celebration.
Vernon, of course, is the home for many natives who were born here or others who have lived here. It is also the home of many who have never lived here but trace their roots to Vernon and through Vernon back to antiquity. Thus Vernon is considered “Home” by many but is the current residence of few. So to celebrate the Quasquicentennial of the founding of Vernon and the Silver Anniversary of the Olde Tyme Saturday celebration, the country roads are beckoning those who have ties to the community along with those who do not, to take the country roads and come home to celebrate, relive, and reminisce on what your association with Vernon has been to you and your family.
During Vernon’s 125 years it has enjoyed many ups and downs but still survives as a mere shadow of its former self. Over the years the town has seen the coming and going of many residents plus many businesses and organizations including seven church congregations, three service stations, a public school system and the St John Lutheran Parochial School, a millinery shop, several blacksmiths and grocery stores, a hotel, barber shop, Vernon State Bank, pool hall, harness shop, hardware store, cafe, Boy Scout Troop #301, Cub Scout Pack #301, Vernon Local #531 Farmers Union, Vernon Community Club, Vernon Grange #175 and the Vernon Home Demonstration Club. Surviving the 125 years is the Vernon Volunteer Fire Department, the Vernonettes, the Ace Hi 4H Club and the US Post Office. The school house has been converted into the Vernon Community Center and is now registered with the Colorado Historical Society as a historical landmark.
So take the theme “Take Me Home Country Roads” to heart and come home to Vernon to enjoy a weekend celebrating the life you know now, reliving the life you knew in the past, or for a short period of time being a part of country life as it was.
